The watchdog also commented on the rights owed to retail investors, including access, suitability, and distribution.<\/p>\n<p>IOSCO said regulators should tackle cryptocurrencies within existing frameworks where possible and develop new ones if the current systems are insufficient. The framework should cover \u201ccrypto-asset trading, other crypto-asset services, and the issuing, marketing, and selling of crypto-assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the document:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regulatory approach should seek to achieve regulatory outcomes for investor protection and market integrity that are the same as, or consistent with, those that are required in traditional financial markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the IOSCO said regulators should take a consistent global approach to the sector as crypto companies often operate across multiple jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog urged regulators to \u201cconsider bilateral\/multilateral cooperation beyond the context of enforcing\u201d to ensure these companies can be supervised effectively.<\/p>\n<h2>UK\u2019s approach to crypto<\/h2>\n<p>IOSCO\u2019s first recommendation\u2014to treat cryptocurrencies similarly to traditional financial assets\u2014is the opposite of what MPs in the U.K. recently suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Some British politicians have called for crypto trading to be regulated like high-risk industries such as gambling after a Treasury committee inquiry concluded that crypto trading can be \u201caddictive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a <em>Guardian<\/em> report, Treasury committee chair Harriett Baldwin recently said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith no intrinsic value, huge price volatility and no discernible social good, consumer trading of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin more closely resembles gambling than a financial service, and should be regulated as such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Treasury committee believes that regulating the crypto industry like the financial services industry would give it unwarranted legitimacy in the eyes of the public.
